The Affordable Care Act has dramatically changed the American health insurance landscape.
As an independent insurance agency, it is our mission to help you navigate this new marketplace. We have put together some guidelines to help you get started. Please take a moment to read this short message and, as always, don’t hesitate to call, email, or visit us if you need help.
As you probably already know, the ACA has installed a tax penalty that will be assessed to anyone who has not enrolled in a qualified plan before March 31, 2014 open enrollment. This penalty is grandfathered in and does NOT apply to anyone still enrolled in a plan written prior to March 22, 2010 – as long as you retain such a policy and continue to pay the premiums, you will not be penalized, regardless of your existing plan’s ACA compliance (or lack thereof). Unfortunately, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan customers do not have this option – BC/BS has decided to eliminate all non-compliant plans.
Depending on your income level, you may qualify for monthly premium assistance in the form of a tax credit that can, in some cases, dramatically lower your out-of-pocket health costs. If your annual income falls below the following thresholds, you are eligible:
▸ $45,960 for an individual
▸ $110,280 for a family of five
▸ $62,040 for a family of two
▸ $126,360 for a family of six
▸ $78,120 for a family of three
▸ $142,440 for a family of seven
▸ $94,200 for a family of four
▸ $158,520 for a family of eight
If you fit the criteria for premium assistance, please visit www.HealthCare.gov and establish a user name and password in order to determine what your actual tax credit will be. Once you have done so, you will have the option to proceed through this website and sign up for an ACA-compliant plan. If you do so, and you would like to continue to enjoy the benefits of independent representation (at no additional cost), you will need to register us as your agent. If you do not qualify for government assistance, and you are not enrolled in a grandfathered policy, you will still need to sign up for an ACA-compliant plan by March 31 2014, or face a tax penalty.
